How to Get to the North West

Australia's North West is one of the world's last true wilderness areas and the place to go for an authentic Aussie outback adventure. Venture into red-earth country and be amazed by its natural beauty.

Car Travel

Major coastal and inland highways traverse the region from Perth and the Northern Territory, along with a number of four wheel drive tracks including the Gibb River Road. Road trains regularly use the highways and drivers should use caution when attempting to pass. Drivers should also inform a contact of their departure time and estimated arrival time when travelling distances in the outback. Hire cars are also available from Perth and from many of the major towns.

If you're visiting the Pilbara, access is provided by two major sealed road arteries - the North West Coastal Highway and the Great Northern Highway. A more southerly sealed route is also accessible, towards the east along the Great Northern Highway.

Kununurra is the major eastern gateway to the North West after diverting from the Stuart Highway in central Australia.

The Savannah Way is one of Australia's ultimate adventure drives, linking Cairns in Tropical North Queensland with the historic pearling town of Broome in Western Australia, via the natural wonders of Katherine in the Northern Territory.

In the Kimberley, Broome is an ideal starting point to discover the region by taking Derby Road and the unsealed Gibb River Road.

If you'd rather discover the North West at a more leisurely pace to your own schedule, why not hire a vehicle and embark on a driving holiday of your own? You'll find a full range of rental vehicles ranging from motor homes to four-wheel drives available at most major centres.

Bus Travel

Greyhound Australia coaches operate daily bus services connecting all major towns.
