The Wild West

You won't find swinging saloon doors and gun-toting bolsters, but with its tough pioneer history and gold fever tales Kal, as its known locally is the hub of Western Australia's Wild West.

Much remains unchanged from 1800s Kalgoorlie, when the streets and hotels teemed with gold-fevered miners and ladies of the night. Here, the spirit of the gold rush era lives on.

Majestic colonial architecture stands proud, skimpy barmaids serve drinks at historic pubs and a colossal Super Pit "the largest open cut mine in Australia" still mines at the richest square mile of gold bearing earth in the world.

Adventure-wise, towns don't get much better than Kal.

Visit an original corrugated iron shack where the gambling game of two-up took place, or stroll down the heady red light district on Hay Street.

Explore an old mine shaft and discover historic hardships at the Mining Hall of Fame, or climb Mt Charlotte for a million-dollar view of the town.

Pan for gold, tour eerie neighbouring ghost towns Broad Arrow and Kanowna, or ogle impressive Edwardian buildings in Kalgoorlie's town square.

Gold Prospector in KalgoorlieFor a once-in-a-lifetime experience go bush with one of Kalgoorlie's experienced Indigenous guides, who will teach you about authentic Aboriginal culture.

Meet modern Aboriginal people in outback communities, forage for bushtucker and hear spiritual Dreamtime tales around a campfire.

Oh, and if you're wondering about Kalgoorlie weather, you're in luck - expect plenty of blue skies and sunshine, with a 25 degree-Celsius yearly average.
