Quirky Events and People

The Outback is where you will find old-fashioned, rip-snortin' Aussie fun.

Doll up in your finest attire and join in the fun at "B&S" (Bachelors and Spinsters) ball. The schooners flow like a babbling brook at this annual bush bash.

Kulin ArtworkThe Kulin Bush Races, with its horse, camel, sheep and dog racing, epitomise the spirit and hospitality of rural Western Australia.

It's well worth visiting Kulin in the months before the main event, when homemade tin horses appear in the paddocks lining the Tin Horse Highway.

The horses are made from all sorts of materials, strike all manner of poses and many will have you in stitches.

Broome's Shinju Matsuri or Festival of the Pearl, is a colourful celebration commemorating Japanese pearl divers.

The week-long festivities include dragon boat racing, a float parade through China Town and a flamboyant mardi gras.

At Corrigin in the Wheatbelt, man's two best mates unite as country folk from far and wide try to break the national record for having the most utes in one place at one time - with a dog in the back of course!

Dog And UteWestern Australia is the reigning champ, with an unbeaten record of 1,527.

Join locals for a coldie and experience some great Aussie camaraderie at this seriously entertaining fundraiser.

Party the weekend away at the Boyup Brook Ute and Truck Muster, as locals, buskers, bush poets and bands honour their favourite wheels.

At the Pingrup Races and Root Muster, dress up as a Mallee root.

There are prizes galore, including best dressed root, biggest root and longest root.

The Outback is also where you will find fair dinkum Aussie characters drinking ice-cold beer and telling tall tales.

Local icons include 80-year-old Sam Lovell, a country and western singer who is part of the stolen generation and a pioneer of indigenous tourism.

Metropole Hotel, BoulderAt Faraway Bay say g'day to Bruce Ellison, a leather-skinned former wild donkey shooter who runs the secluded resort and is always on hand to spin a yarn.

On a Monkey Mia Wildsights tour, you're bound to bump into Harvey Raven, the "Indiana Jones" of the area.

Endearingly eccentric, he loves a good story and is a sight to behold as he conducts his tours in a stretch limousine.

There are plenty of characters in outback Western Australia - just pull up a stool at any country pub and you're bound to meet one!
